"The Bible According to Tintoretto” - Ester Brunet

For a long time there has been a need for an instrument that could help visitors in the reading and interpretation of the content of Tintoretto's cycle of paintings in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco - known to many as the "Sistine Chapel" of Venice - not only for their artisitic quality but also for their complexity of theological meaning and for the depth of Biblical culture that they express.

The guide follows the chronological order of the paintings, starting with the Sala dell'Albergo, the farthest from the entrance yet the first to be painted by Tintoretto, coninuing with the Sala Capitolare, about which several readings are proposed, and ending with the Sala Terrena.

Following a brief introduction to each section, which contextualizes the cycles and underlines their general themes, there are several inserts dedicated to each specific painting.

The guide is one of the concrete results of the methodological approach that the "Studium Generale Marcianum" of Venice pursues with respect to "bene cultural" ("cultural assets") that, since 2008-2009, have become the subject of a two-year university specialization. The idea is that there is a profound connection between art, faith and theology and that there is an urgent need to counteract the growing phenomenon of religious "illiteracy" that makes it impossible to fully understand the messages of the artistic Christian tradition.
